Where the heck did July go??? Just looking at my archived blogs I noticed there is no July blog. Given we're now in the midst of August, let's just for argument's sake consider this the July/August blog :)
So... moving on. Some years ago I hosted a podcast show titled 'Reiki by Lisa'. On this show I was blessed to have connected and spoken with some of the most knowledgeable people in the animal world at that time. Amongst them was Leif Cocks (The Orangutan Project), Rose De Dan (Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing), Kathy Munslow (Gunyah Animal Healing Sanctuary) and many, MANY more. Although each guest offered incredible insight into his or her knowledge of their respective field, one particular conversation stuck with me and still challenges me to this day. That conversation was with Zoo-keeper Penny Cooper who at the time had just returned home from her position as carer of the Giant Panda's at Zoo Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. Penny had a great deal of experience in Australia having worked at the most respected of zoo's here, including Melbourne Zoo, Taronga Zoo (Sydney) and Perth Zoo. Penny's care-taking experience included Cheetah's, Gorilla's and many of our Australian marsupials. In our conversation, we glossed over the "concept" of Animal Communication. At that time, AC was very much in the foetal stage here in Australia with perhaps one or two recognisable active communicators at best. I always believed in this field of connection, however Penny put forward that we should not 'anthropomorphise' animals, as 'that's where the trouble lay." We discussed this further but the twain did not meet. Wikipedia describes Anthropomorphism as follows: Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions or intentions to non-human entities. It is considered to be an innate tendency of human psychology. What is Animal Communication then? What it is NOT is the attribution of human traits, emotions or intentions to non-human entities. As an Animal Communicator myself and I'm 1000% convinced that every other AC will agree with me, I can attest that animals have their own traits, emotions and intentions quite separate from human entities. So was Penny correct? Is Anthropomorphism in fact where the trouble does lay? Perhaps if we are in fact projecting our own thoughts and our own emotions onto an animal perceiving it as THEIR thoughts and intentions, then she may well be correct. Science is now 'discovering' (it's been a fact since time immortal) that animals in fact DO possess intelligence, construct, mathematical ability, telepathy, empathy, sensitivity, psychic ability and healing abilities. Is there still a place for anthropomorphism? Perhaps; but as we learn more about our kindred earthlings, the truth of one connection, one world is no longer a dream and vision, but a functioning reality. Have a great month everyone! Cheers, Lisa
