Every month I go through this. I wonder what will I write about? What do you really want to know? How can I best help you?
Have you ever tried an answer a question that was never asked?
It’s not easy.
And so I to combat these “unasked questions”, I observe!
And so for the month of November, I will share some of my observations with you and what I feel may be of some benefit. You may find yourself having “aha” moments or perhaps shaking your head in disbelief at what I have encountered! Either way, I trust some or one of my “observations” will be of assistance to you and your pets.
You’re an animal lover. So I’m hedging my bets you’ve got your own pet peeve when it comes to how some people connect or more to the point, “don’t” connect with their dogs, particularly when they are out walking them!
Whilst on a recent weekend getaway in Townsville, I was observing the many dog-walkers that parade The Strand on any evening. It’s something to behold.
The Strand is a 2.2km world-class beachfront promenade custom-built for enjoyment. It is one of the most beautiful stretches of waterfront walkway’s I have ever seen. The beachfront reaches out to Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef. It’s almost a religious experience as every evening it comes alive with skateboarders, cyclists, joggers, fitness fanatics, families and of course, dog-walkers.
Firstly, I will say that all the dogs looked well-cared for, all had harnesses and the greater majority were very well behaved. There were the token ShiTzu’s throwing their weight around and ensuring the Rottweilers and Retrievers knew their place, but all in all, everyone got on pretty well.
Some people were really connecting with dogs… and others… well others were so focussed on their phones that when the dogs attempted to move away from the footpath to do their ablutions, they were literally dragged off mid-poo!
I thought to myself as you do… should I go over to that person and just ask politely with a very genuine smile on my face “Can I ask how you think you might feel if you were dragged off the loo mid-poo?” And whilst they were downloading this unfathomable question, I would continue with “I suspect it wouldn’t be very enjoyable. I suspect it would be uncomfortable, embarrassing and extremely stressful don’t you think?” Again… I wait for a response from the vacant expression.
However, I decided not to follow this through (no pun intended), but I did come to the conclusion that some people may need to be brought to this awareness. But how…. how….. hmmm.
People walk their dog for myriad reasons. Exercise for both. Relieving said dog of day-long boredom due to being home all day whilst their person worked. Social connection on The Strand...
But how many dog-walkers did it to connect? Really connect with their dog? Really spend precious and valuable time being with the one who probably loves their company more than anyone else does.
I wondered how could I bring this to their attention. I’m still wondering. xx
